The pool is drained and a diluted acid solution is applied to the plaster, dissolving a very thin layer of the surface along with the stains, algae and mineral deposits bonded to it. The surface is neutralized, rinsed and the pool is refilled and rebalanced.
Done correctly, it lifts years of discoloration and brings back the original color of the plaster.
What It Fixes
Acid washing is the right call for stubborn mineral staining, embedded algae after a long neglect, and general dinginess that brushing and chemistry cannot lift. It is especially effective on pools that have been let go and are being brought back into service.
It is also a good reset before starting consistent weekly service on a pool with a rough history.
What It Does Not Fix
Acid washing removes plaster. It cannot repair plaster that is already failing. Cracking, delamination, rough exposed aggregate and structural staining need replastering, and an acid wash on a surface like that makes it worse.

How Often Is Too Often
Every wash takes some plaster with it. A pool that is properly maintained should rarely need one. If your pool is being acid washed every couple of years, the real problem is the maintenance between washes.
